According to the guidebook, Charlotte’s mother was dying. They were very very poor and had never had cake or anything before but had always talked about how they would one day share one together, so when Kyuubey asked Charlotte what she wanted for he wish, she wished for a delicious cake. Her mother died, and then she found out she could have wished to save her mother and feel immediately into grief. She never even fought a witch.
Rewatching her world is so different when you know that. All the medicine bottles and pastries. It also makes Mami’s suggestion to Madoka of wishing for a big cake for them to share all the more tragic.
